Certain habits and routines can enhance A Lifestyle of Productivity. Productivity can mean getting through a daily to do list, being creative, multi-tasking, closing deals, teaching, athletic endeavors, and so much more.
Let’s start at the bottom of the list with sleep as important for productivity. Sleep is when the body repairs and relaxes the nervous system. A lack of sleep stimulates cortisol which leads to negative eating and behaviors. Creative people often work best in the morning when their nervous system is relaxed.
Many behaviors lead to a good night’s sleep, but very important is the feeling before going to sleep that you have had a good day. When I can say I was productive and achieved my daily goals, I can feel content and accept that I deserve to end the day falling asleep peacefully.
So then, let’s take it to the beginning. What are the important tasks for each day and what time blocks are allocated to achieve them? My most important task begins with creativity and I find that starting early is the most productive. I wake rested and my routine is now to have tea and set before the computer to write. My mind and body are accustomed to my routine and accepts the task.
My next productivity task is exercise or teaching. My morning routine continues with a meal replacement shake and preparing for exercise or teaching surf lessons. My exercise is frequently 3 hours and I know my first meal will be around noon. This continues my habit of watching calories and intermittent fasting. Health and athletic abilities are priorities which include weight control.
Time blocks allow for accomplishing the most difficult or important tasks without interruption. Even though multi-tasking is praised, scientists say we lose 50% of our intellectual capacity while multi-tasking. We achieve more by working on priority projects one at a time when we have the most energy.
Create a block for everything that is not essential to achieving your long term goals and dealing with all those things that would be considered interruptions. This would be a good time for emails, returning phone calls, book keeping, and other minor tasks.
It is important that each day feel meaningful. It is important we feel we are on purpose with our days and activities. Otherwise, we are not going to feel content at night. It is important we have time for ourselves each day. Many have an exercise which they feel is their sweet spot or time to get lost in thought.
It is good to have timed breaks for the day and the month. I have the luxury when not in surf lesson season to go camping. Camping is time for solitude. If I can stay for three days I drop into a deep well of peace and relaxation. It makes me more creative when I return because I come from a deeper source of peace.
Don’t lose touch with who you are, why you are here, and your purpose. These are the underlying sources of a meaningful life. They will support daily productivity. They will lead to a feeling of contentment and peace at night when it is time to go to sleep.
