Emotions are a weapon and not a hindrance as was thought in past business scenarios. It was thought men made better leaders than women because they were not emotional. Research showed that male leaders analyzed facts but then used their intuition to decide with their emotional gut feeling.
Women have come into leadership because it is recognized and appreciated that they have excellent emotional intelligence. Workers want empathetic leaders who want to understand how they are feeling. Think about your daily life and how much you appreciate someone who listens to you.
Creative people are in their right brain or emotional brain. The right brain can borrow from the left brain for intellectual needs but relies heavily on being in touch with the subconscious, intuition, and many will say universal consciousness.
All the answers we need are available in the Universe but we haven’t tapped into them yet. The fact we keep making discoveries show the information has been there all the time, we are not creating it for the first time. Its only the first time for us mortals with our limited knowledge of how all things work.
Being in touch with your subconscious, your intuition, and Universal intelligence is how we create, solve problems, and enjoy flow. We can’t solve everything with experience. We often have to create new strategies out of the air. This is called innovation and creativity.
Laird Hamilton was the first of the modern era to ride the monster wave Teahapoo in Tahiti. Even Tahitians wouldn’t ride it. On a giant wave that landed him on the cover of Surfer Magazine, he had made a move with his hands to stay from getting sucked up the face of the wave. It was a creative move made on the spot without thinking. You can’t think in these situations. It wasn’t something not available to surfers, it was something that was learned on the spot.
This is the beauty of flow. Flow is the operation of our mind and body, when engaged in sports that allows us to act faster than thinking would allow. If you have to think in extreme sports, you will probably be dead. We can access that which we have never known while in flow to reach peak performances.
Flow takes us beyond our normal capabilities. That is how we get into flow. We try something we haven’t done that is just a little harder than what we have done. Our brain shuts out judgement or self-criticism to express the talent we have. It is our potential. It is felt often by speakers, entertainers, teachers, writers, surgeons, and other people in action. A lifetime performance usually requires flow.
Flow is all about emotions. It is the joining of our experience with the desire to feel the adrenaline of a challenge. Our brain loves flow. It stimulates dopamine, serotonin, and when physically engaged, endorphins. You can’t get to a higher stage of performance than when you are in flow. Learn to trust your subconscious and intuition to make the right decisions.
Soloist rock climber Dean Cotter says he climbs for the feelings he experiences, not to get on top of rocks. Video gamers are absorbed for hours because the challenge stimulates adrenaline, and they are making split decisions without thinking. They are aware of the emotions they are feeling.
Love is a high-performance emotion that is often called a passion. We enjoy and perform better when engaged in a passion. We have high levels of resilience when engaged in passions. We don’t think of or fear failure when engaged in passionate activities. Passionate people attract followers, therefore passionate people can make good leaders.
Get into your emotions and learn how to channel them for higher performance and a purposeful life.
