How Does a Recession Affect Thriving

A recession affects everyone in a different way. Those who are employed might be worried about continued employment. Employers affected by fewer sales are trying to cut costs and may want to cut support to workers for the short term. Everyone is nervous about how long until it bottoms.

Worry is not only part of the economic cycle, it is natural to the human psyche. It serves a purpose for Nature who wants man to always worry about survival. Nature’s main goals are to see man is hungry and wants to procreate and then take care of his brood. This is her game plan.

When we behave to serve Nature by eating, having a mate, procreating, and then caring of and protecting our brood and livelihood, we get happiness brain chemicals like dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. When we have completed one of these tasks, our brain stimulates cortisol, the worry hormone, to put us back on the hunt.

We wouldn’t be hungry and desire sex if it were not for hormones. Our brain and body become used to highs and lows. Economic swings create the same mental responses. We are happy and then we are worried. The thriving person wants to find the path through to maintain their equilibrium.

Moving Forward Everyday with Our Game Plan

Two ideas can help us battle the worry that is natural with economic cycles. We have a long-term plan that we pursue daily with our routine growth behaviors. We look for ways to continue our contribution. We lean on our strongest growth habits.

My surf coaching business is threatened by weather and recession. My consulting business is at the effect of Organization spending plans. My five standard habits carry me through the day. I meditate in the morning. This immediately reduces the anxiety I might have woken up with in the morning. I then get into creativity with writing and podcasting. I follow with exercise. I plan my nutrition for the day and my health routines. I find ways to learn during the day.

These are my four focus words as well under my main word of self-actualization. I believe in health, learning, creativity, and contribution. I follow the habits each day that support my four words. Each of these activities reinforces my identity and my purpose. I don’t give up on the habits that build my growth and self-actualization. My self-actualization is a life-time process and faces lots of resistance from so many obstacles along the path.

A spiritual person doesn’t stop believing in the Universe because of bad weather. Bad weather is an unconscious event in the multiple patterns that we experience in life. So is everything else. When a billion butterflies in the form of other people, natural events, and economic events occur, we get a multitude of possible results and incidents all crossing paths as everything reacts and assimilates.

There is always a light at the end of the tunnel even if we don’t see it today. The idea is to keep moving through the tunnel until we see the light. We have faith in who we are and that the path we are on is right for us. Our habits are so basic to our growth that they are the best offense to winning our own game. I stick to my growth habits and know I will be better every month. At the end of the year all the results of my habits will have accumulated to place me in a better spot than last year.

Keep the faith, keep the habits, face the resistance, don’t ever give up.

As a Thriving Worker Consultant, I can engage in conversations with employers on how to begin the process of helping workers thrive and reach peak performance. It begins with a conversation to see how far an organization is willing to go to change the culture for workers.

Great practices for daily living can be learned with the Markap Series of Books. If your organization would like live presentations or Zoom meetings, they can be arranged for small to large groups.
