Right now, I see adversity all around us. Financial markets certainly are afraid and even Warren Buffet is making defensive moves. Jamie Dimon, head of JP Morgan-Chase and darling of Wall Street says his disaster team that meets once a week might start meeting every day in face of possible U.S. Debt default. All this in addition to pronounced recession fears.
This is certainly trickling down to all businesses and citizens have to be worrying about whether they should take their money out of banks. It shakes our confidence in our government, the system, and life in general.
We are facing possible adversity and have to take stock of the available tools to combat the environment we face, at least in the short term. Next month, everything may be back to normal. What do we rely on as humans when faced with adversity?
A thriving person already has several beliefs in place that motivate his feelings of confidence. Utilizing the basic principals we have been discussing in thriving we might come up with this list of 7 tools.
These include:
One of the first things that strikes me is the lack of self-pity or the woe is me syndrome. When times are tough, we often ask “why me”? Countering this is our faith that life is as it is meant to be and we are where we are supposed to be at any moment. We are built to face adversity and work our way through.
This ability is the essence of being an entrepreneur. I like the saying an entrepreneur jumps from the plane and then puts on his parachute. Adventurers are drawn to risk. Did Columbus think it was risky to sail West and find out if falling off the earth was a reality as everyone believed? Did Elon Mush have any concerns about taking on the biggest industry on earth with a brand new concept that could break the industry? In essence the EV has broken the industry but the big companies have jumped on board. Talk about the impact of one man.
We have the same DNA as Elon Musk. All humans only vary by a few percent. Big wave surfers always have fear. They manage it. They often say, this is what I do, this is who I am. When they drop into a 90′ wave, there are a lot of bad things that could happen.
I go back to my one word. Self-actualization. I am always improving. I have a conviction to work on my health, skills, and passions on a daily basis. I expect to face headwinds. I have faith I will survive all adversity. I have faith I will get into the middle of problems and figure it out. My drive is to keep on going regardless of the obstacles. I will come out the other side in one fashion or another.
Who said “damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead”? Certainly out of a movie. We may be headed into unprecedented uncertainty and maybe calamity, but we will all survive. Let’s attack with faith in ourselves and our ability to figure it out.
