Most people these days are struggling with excess Weight and Lifestyle. Our diets become habits and our choices define our thoughts about health and the lifestyle we want to live.
Health and fitness are a lifestyle and so is being overweight and sedentary a lifestyle. The standard for normal and overweight is the Body Mass Index which is a function of height and weight. Calculate yours
It is not easy to lose significant weight. It requires a negative calorie balance. No one disagrees about this. Most diets will create weight loss if you stick to them. The reason the many diet plans work is they calculate negative calorie balance based on your current weight, level of activity, age, and target weight goal.
Exercise is not necessary to lose weight, but it increases the difference between calories consumed and calories burned. Combining negative calorie balance and exercise accelerates your results. The reason people have difficulty with a healthy regimen is they don’t want that lifestyle.
The long term consequences are usually diseases or other events. The body can compromise abuse for only so long before cells and systems start to weaken. In the pancreas, after the insulin has been over produced for a long period of time the beta cells die and normal body cells reject insulin. This results in Diabetes types 1 or 2.
Our circulatory system can only absorb so much fatty foods before our arteries clog and rob the brain or heart of blood flow resulting in a stroke or heart attack. A lack of anti-oxidants plus too much sugar can cause cells to misfire and become radical creating cancers.
Most people that are healthy have a different perspective from those that are not healthy. They see their life differently. They respect the fact their body needs maintenance to function optimally and to preserve a quality of life into their senior years. Others think their body will do just fine without maintenance and that health care can correct future problems.
A deeper and underlying problem is that those with few health concerns cannot control their brain’s choices. Our brain works mostly on a subconscious level and it likes calories and rest. It will often urge us to make the high calorie choice and not do something that looks like exertion. Those with poor health cannot override their subconscious desires as a lifestyle.
Personal trainers and health coaches are often successful in helping people make the transition to healthy habits but will concede that most of their clients within a year are back to their old habits. People who lose weight usually put it back on. The metabolism puts up a great fight once we lose weight and it takes the second strategy to keep weight off.
If you are healthy, you don’t need to be told what to do. If you do not live a healthy lifestyle you must look at the whole picture of your thoughts and perspective to see if change is in your future.
