How Do We Manage Fear
Fear is a reality in everyone’s life whether you are at the top or the bottom. This is because there is so much change. Change brings uncertainty. Uncertainty creates fear. Fear is a natural response and meant to save our lives.
Our body has slow and fast reactions to fear. Some reactions are our subconscious reaction. If an object is flying at your head, you might duck without thinking because your brain has certain automatic safeguards. An extreme athlete wants to get into flow where is brain and body are reacting without thinking or he wouldn’t survive. The eyes see the challenge and the body reacts automatically from training.
Learning to Manage Fear
Fear can also cause slower reactions because the object of fear hasn’t arrived. Maybe it will never arrive. That doesn’t stop us from being fearful or paranoid. We can be trained to manage fear. A surfer will say he is always fearful on large waves. If not, he is likely in for trouble. A military person has been trained in scenarios so many times, he knows he will react correctly. He looks forward to testing his skills.
What about an entrepreneur? They run towards fear. What they want to accomplish requires creating something new. Their possibility of failure can be high. This makes them a bit of an adrenaline junkie. Startup businesses want to fail fast so they learn quicker. This makes them more competitive and then more successful.
In our lives, the more we have dared, the more accustomed we are to being uncomfortable with the unknown or change. I personally have never enjoyed jobs that were too routine and predictable. It made me feel I was at a dead end. I wanted risk from bigger goals and challenges.
Challenge is the Key to Learning About Fear
Challenge gets us into flow where all our happiness brain chemicals are stimulated, and we gain a feeling of bliss. It is the basis for extreme athletes and video gamers. They need risk to perform their best and find out who they are.
If finding out who you are is important, you cannot live without risk. Risk is the key direction you travel. You are always needing to find out your capabilities. You are not satisfied with the status quo and thinking there are no more heights to experience.
If you are bored, it is because there is no risk in your life. You have settled and you are not learning nor challenging yourself. You are not learning how you are unique from everyone else. No two people are alike so you can’t determine where you reside on the success latter until you quit trying.
Making an effort to self-actualize and become better will be a constant test of who you are. Those who enjoy risk don’t see fear as others do. It is said, entrepreneurs jump from the plane and then put on their parachute. They relish the opportunity to challenge the unknown and figure it out as they go.
So, if you have fear, you can realize you are heading in the right direction and learn to manage it as you put forth your best efforts. If you cower in fear, it will have gotten the best of you and you will never feel safe.

As a Thriving Worker Consultant, I can engage in conversations with employers on how to begin the process of helping workers thrive and reach peak performance. It begins with a conversation to see how far an organization is willing to go to change the culture for workers.
Great practices for daily living can be learned with the Markap Series of Books. If your organization would like live presentations or Zoom meetings, they can be arranged for small to large groups.
