Charge Into Change

charge into change

When facing a change, gear up and get all systems moving to support the mental and emotional challenges you anticipate facing. Fear may play a big factor, but there are psychological tricks to deal with it inhibiting progress.

How often and how many times in our life have we dealt with fear of change? We don’t like the unknown. The lizard brain is a primitive method living species deal with fear which is either run or attack. If you are facing a lion, unfortunately, their instinct is to attack. If you are facing a big challenge or worrisome event, what is your instinct?

I like Kali Kavara’s approach to fear. She is a spiritual leader and healer. She says most of the time fear is something unrealized. It is almost an unfair attack on our nervous system because we can’t see it and it hasn’t happened. When it occurs, we can create the moves or counterattack to deal with it. So, realize first of all that our fears frequently never happen or that if we act, we prevent them from being negative.

Gear Up Other Habits to Face a Challenge

When I was in real estate management, I would have fears of an upcoming challenge. I was also a runner putting in 5 miles a day. When I knew a challenge was on the horizon, I would up my running game to longer distances or perhaps faster to muster the determination and willpower I knew I would need.

There are other good habits that can be accelerated to prove to yourself you are mentally, psychologically, emotionally, and physically prepared. Improve eating habits and this is actually a good time to lose weight. Develop the discipline that says I can handle challenges.

Exercise. It is a statement that says I value myself enough when I may be time stressed to take time out for my wellbeing. It will calm your nervous system more than any other activity.

Meditate. This is a 20 minute session first thing in the morning to let your fears expose themselves and for you to sink into them. Give them some light. Face the worst that could happen. I think immediately you will see the options. When your session is finished, you may be finished thinking you can’t handle the fear.

Know What Fear Is

Fear is the thought whatever is happening is too big for us. It rarely is. I always look to take the small bites right away out of the challenge to start minimizing the effects of what we are facing. I have always said that with a hammer and chisel I could reduce the biggest rock to rubble if I had enough time. Start chiseling right away.

Find support. It doesn’t hurt to tell someone you trust about your fear. They will realize how you feel and most likely offer come encouraging comments. You will feel someone has your back emotionally.

Change helps us make progress. It helps us build resilience. The special ops person perfects his skills by facing continuous challenge in training. The idea is that when he gets in a real situation, his instincts will be honed to correct reactions. An entrepreneur develops a mentality to face risks. He lives for them. They say an entrepreneur jumps out of a plane and then puts on his parachute.

Some Top Performers Use Risk As a Guide

The extreme athlete and adrenaline junkie live for risk. For them, risk is not always fear. They have the best counter attack know to man. They get into flow. In flow, we are engaged and are so focused on what we are doing our prefrontal cortex, the fear center, shuts down and allows us to express ourselves creating peak performances.

In fact, when we focus on a challenge and get into flow while engaged, our brain stimulates dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and maybe endorphins. We reach a state of bliss. Imagine a soloist rock climber facing death with each move and being in a blissful state. This state is why he risks his life.

How about you? Can you look at a fear and say this is why I am here? I was made to face these challenges. I will be the best there is at facing them and conquering them. Right now in the basketball playoffs, Lebron James once again faces Stephen Curry. They have done this before. They are champions and this is the moment they must play their absolute best. If they choke, they will know fear won.

Look at your challenge as a basketball playoff. Everyone is expecting you to play your best. This is the opportunity to shine. The more often you face these challenges, the better you get at facing these challenges. Some leaders get paid big time because they can come into crisis situations and save the day. Be one of those leaders.

You are facing a challenge. You have heard the term buckle up. This is the time to buckle up and show the world what you are made of. There is no failure. Each time you don’t achieve the desired results you have learned something about how to do it next time. This is why startups like to fail fast, so they learn faster.

There is no failure if you stay in the game.

As a Thriving Worker Consultant, I can engage in conversations with employers on how to begin the process of helping workers thrive and reach peak performance. It begins with a conversation to see how far an organization is willing to go to change the culture for workers.

Great practices for daily living can be learned with the Markap Series of Books. If your organization would like live presentations or Zoom meetings, they can be arranged for small to large groups.
