What Are the Building Blocks that Lead to Thriving?
Thriving is a newer concept in our society and in the minds of organizations. Microsoft said it is the new North Star. What is it about thriving that would make a large organization think it would improve their performance if all its workers were thriving?
Thriving might be the new self-actualization that is on top of the Arthur Maslow pyramid. My one word is self-actualization and my why is it makes me feel most alive and purposeful. If I am always improving, I am getting the happiness brain chemicals Nature designed for us to better adapt as a reward for trying to make things better for ourselves and others.
Developing our Thriving Pyramid
We could create the same pyramid as Arthur Maslow and add blocks to get to the top of the pyramid as if we were going to climb one in Egypt. At the bottom is struggling. Most of us struggle for years as we work into our adulthood. School can be fun but we are struggling to perform so we can get into college. Then we get our first job and we are struggling to perform and impress people.
One of the first blocks we should create is taking care of our health. We have mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health. Each is a measure of the faith and gratitude we have for Nature creating a beautiful vessel that performs at a peak if properly maintained. It is our affirmation that everything is as it should be and we can take the time to appreciate what we are.
The next important block is learning. If we are going to make a contribution as Nature and mankind expects, we have to know something. We need skills. We need abilities that serve others. We need to create our purpose for being here by reaching our potential. The more we learn, the bigger the contribution we can make.
Contribution should be our North Star. It is the Nature of everything in Nature to be part of the larger scheme. Cells give everything to make the whole organism work. In early man, everyone in the community had their assignment. As society formed there was a place for workers, leaders, professionals, philosophers, clergy, and leaders. We are always a part of and connected to the whole and must do our part.
Finally, our life is successful when we have flow in our lives. It makes us happy. Flow is engaging in activities in which we have competence and in which we challenge ourselves to improve. Extreme athletes understand the preparation and training necessary to challenge the elements and risking their lives. We challenge the system by becoming a part of it and making our best contribution. We have arrived when we flow in activities and when our life flows because we have developed our purpose and know why we are here.
Now we are thriving. At this point, we are way beyond needing the perks and bonuses organizations may offer us because we may appreciate them, but we are on a much bigger mission. We are rising to our potential and we want to take others and our organization with us or coordinate and collaborate so we are rise together. We feel connection and unity with all things. We feel love for ourselves, others and the life we have the opportunity to live. We have arrived.

As a Thriving Worker Consultant, I can engage in conversations with employers on how to begin the process of helping workers thrive and reach peak performance. It begins with a conversation to see how far an organization is willing to go to change the culture for workers.
Great practices for daily living can be learned with the Markap Series of Books. If your organization would like live presentations or Zoom meetings, they can be arranged for small to large groups.
